TAQA completes Europe’s largest third-party access gas storage facility

TAQA, the international energy company from Abu Dhabi, has completed its Gas Storage Bergermeer facility in the Netherlands at the Energy Innovation park, now the largest third-party access gas storage in Europe. TAQA will start injecting customers’ gas into the reservoir tomorrow at full capacity in preparation for the winter heating season.

“The successful launch of Bergermeer is a demonstration of our renewed and strengthened focus on efficiency and operational excellence,” said His Excellency Saeed Al-Hajeri, Chairman of TAQA. “This state-of-the-art facility is the outcome of the strong and long-lasting partnership between the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates and some of the world’s leading gas companies. Our combined efforts will improve the security of energy supplies for the European people for decades to come.”

Operated by TAQA, the underground storage facility provides gas suppliers with the flexibility required to match fluctuations in demand and help improve security of gas supply throughout Europe. With a capacity of 46 terawatt hours (4.1 billion cubic metres), enough to supply 2.5 million Dutch households for a year, Gas Storage Bergermeer doubles the Netherlands’ seasonal gas storage capacity.

“Gas Storage Bergermeer represents excellence in the development of large energy infrastructure projects and we are proud we delivered our commitment to complete this project safely, on schedule and within budget,” said Edward LaFehr, Chief Operating Officer of TAQA. “As an active member of the local community we look forward to operating our new, world class gas storage facility safely and reliably for the long term.”

A majority of Bergermeer’s capacity is available according to the EU’s third-party access rules set out in its gas directive. The rules help ensure all market participants access ‎to the storage which helps to increase competition and create a more effective integrated European gas market.
The International Energy Agency, the intergovernmental organisation that coordinates national energy security policies, has commended TAQA for the launch, calling it an important milestone for the creation of the integrated European Energy Union. “The EU is the largest energy importer in the world and the growing dependence on a limited number of gas supply sources is leaving the region vulnerable to supply disruptions,” said Maria van der Hoeven,

Executive Director of the International Energy Agency who will inaugurate the facility in Alkmaar tomorrow. “The investment in Gas Storage Bergermeer has helped improve resilience and is an important milestone for the creation of the integrated European Energy Union.”

Located near the city of Alkmaar, Gas Storage Bergermeer consists of the depleted Bergermeer gas reservoir, a gas treatment facility and connecting pipeline network. Construction started in 2012 and took more than 3,000,000 work hours to complete. More than 8,300 people worked on the project which started limited commercial operations in April 2014. TAQA has developed the project together with the Netherlands state-owned oil and gas company EBN.

Gas Storage Bergermeer is fully contracted for the 2015/2016 storage season running from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016. TAQA will auction capacity for the 2016 storage season in September 2015. The facility’s launching customers include EDF, Gazprom, Statoil and Vattenfall.

Local energy partner HVC in the news with heat from waste

In the coming year, the Dutch government stimulates companies to use more heat from waste or renewable sources. The Energy Innovation Park houses a large heating provider (HVC) to supply heat to the buildings.

Connection to the heating results in a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions. Who chooses connection delivers so unnoticed and a significant contribution to a better climate can count on a highly reliable source of heat at a competitive rate.

New Energy Innovation incubator: IDEA

As of now people with a good idea in the field of sustainable energy can go to Incubator Duurzame Energie Alkmaar (IDEA) for the realisation of a concept and develop an independent company. IDEA is established in the Inholland building (educational institute) in Alkmaar and has the goal to support innovative startups in the area of energy.

Wind turbines, tidal energy, houses that produce more energy than consume. Produce gas and oil from garbage, but also from plastics, cosmetics and food. This all fits a new economy in which sustainability asks for new markets and new products. The companies that together form IDEA, want to speed up developments by linking the ‘diamant pentagon’, which are entrepreneurs, education, research, government and the region.

International Energy Conference in Alkmaar

On 2 October Alkmaar was the stage for the first edition of the international conference Biomass Gasification Europe (BGE 2014). A conference on biomass gasification and the essential role biomass plays in the application of clean, reliable and innovative energy. Biomass gasification is a promising technology that produces high caloric green gas that can be used in existing infrastructures. During the conference InVesta was presented, an expert center for biomass gasification projects. InVesta resides at the Energy Innovation Park.

This first edition of the Biomass Gasification Europe conference has been organized in cooperation with the Energy Innovation Park. Besides an ideal location for housing your company, the Energy Innovation Park offers the Energy Innovation Center. An innovative center for, amongst others, development of a demonstration installation for biomass gasification. This installation emphasizes the Energy Park as a future testing and research location, which supports the intention to support the transition to sustainable energy management in the Netherlands.

LNG filling station settles on Energy Innovation Park

As of the first quarter of 2015 it will be possible to tank LNG at the Energy Innovation Park at the first public LNG filling station in the province of North Holland. The company GP Groot, a trader in fuels and oil, will build the LNG filling station aligned with Energy Innovation Park.

The building of the LNG filling station fits the Parks line of thought by producing alternative fuels. The use of LNG (liquefied natural gas) is getting more popular in the transport sector.

LNG is a liquefied natural gas that forms when natural gas is cooled to minus 160 degrees Celsius. The consumable costs are lower than with diesel, and it is cleaner than diesel, reducing CO2 emmissions and partical pollution. Apart from that, trucks powered by LNG generate fifty percent less noise than diesel trucks. GP Groot’s ambition is to offer LBG (liquid bio gas) in the future.

The filling station is being equipped with an LNG-installation of a prominent supplier of industrial gases. Aside from LNG, diesel and AdBlue will also be available, and there will be a possibility to fill up on bio-CO2. Bio-CO2 is emerging as a sustainable alternative to diesel for cooling cargotrailers.

The choice for locating the filling station at the Energy Innovation Park is, according to GP Groot, an obvious one. It is located next to one of the main highways, there are multiple activities of transport-and energycompanies in the area and you can take into account all the synergy advantages of the presence of SMEs, as well as national and international players.

New centre of expertise for biomass gasification

At the Biomass Gasification Europe conference, Investa, the institute for Valorization and Expertise of Thermochemics Alkmaar, was presented to the public. InVesta is founded by the municipality of Alkmaar, province North Holland, ECN, TAQA, Energy Valley and the Energy Board. And will be THE national knowledge and expertise center in the field of biomass gasification.

InVesta offers entrepreneurs, knowledge developers, universities and other educational institutes physical space and opportunities for research, testing and developing innovative techniques of the biomass gasification and future technologies. The gasification of biomass is a relatively new and sustainable technology.

The product of biomass gasification is called syngas (from synthesis gas or synthetic gas). This high caloric, sustainable gas is widely used. A well-known application is as a base to produce large quantities of green gas (gas of an identical quality as natural gas, but made of biomass) and fuel, but also as an intermediate of the chemical industry.

InVesta will settle at the Energy Enovatioin Park in Alkmaar. A first customer will join at the end of 2014. The company Torrgas from North Holland is building a demonstration plant at the location of InVesta. Paul Korting, board member of Energy Board North Holland and director of ECN: “The Netherlands is aiming for a higher rate of sustainable and clean energy from biomass, wind and sun. By launching InVesta the province of North Holland gives a great contribution to gain more knowledge and technology in the area of sustainable energy. InVesta encourages the application of biogas for the future.”

Opening Technobis by Minister of Economics Kamp
